I will never quit!

I realize I may not have the ability to win every bicycle race this year, but I also realize I am my biggest limiter. I am committing to never quitting in a race this year. I will ride with all my effort in every race, even if I get dropped. I will ride to my limit until I cross the finish line.
“Winning is about heart, not just legs. It's got to be in the right place.”

I'm proud to be racing for Cycles Veloce Team Simple Green again in 2013, and look forward to representing them at all the races I participate in.

I Live For This! (Part 1)

Cycling drives me; it gives me motivation for my day. It’s why I wake up early most days of the week. When I cycle it gives me energy the rest of the day.
So this is how happened. At the end of September I was at peak condition; probably the best and strongest ever in my six+ years of Cycling. And then it hit me. I got a sore throat Thursday which got worse; and on Saturday morning as I was about to have breakfast before the club ride, I decided I didn't feel so good and went back to bed to recover. I slept till 11:30 am. I had to go to work at 1:30 until 10 pm and wished I didn't have to. My throat hurt and it was almost painful to talk and my right eyelid was swollen. Details of how sick I was aren't so important. What is, is how much I missed Cycling. Since I couldn’t ride long, I slept in. The rest of the day I thought about racing and riding, the good times. I probably took this too carefully, but I was afraid of making it worse and lasting for weeks. On Monday I took a very slow 10 mile ride. Tuesday I rode 21 miles, easy again but a little more effort and my legs felt heavy. Wednesday I rode about 31 miles and did some gradual hills and got rather tired out. I felt like I didn't have any power in my legs. I felt a lot healthier, but not strong on the bike. I had no motivation to ride on Thursday and Friday, and felt that rest would be better for me anyways since I didn't think riding would improve my strength. This was demoralizing. I had been in peak condition 5 days ago and now I felt worse than ever! I decided to go out on the Saturday Canyon Velo ride with the mentality that I hadn't been sick and still had my power. At the same time I held back on some climbs and very hard efforts just to be sure not to overdo it. But I felt great on the ride! It seemed I was almost as strong as last week and if I didn't hold back I probably would have been at the front of the climbs. Later that day my legs were a bit sore like they usually are on a Saturday afternoon. I was so happy, because that meant I was back in my beloved sport of Cycling!
We all have commitments in our lives and loves as well. For me it’s a balance of work, school, family and cycling. They're all important, but I love cycling the most. This article is the first in a series. Some of you ride for different reasons and have different schedules, etc. I'd like to invite you to write an article about why you cycle and how it fits into your lifestyle. We'll publish it here on the VeloRider.org blog! Send it to administrator@velorider.org
Thanks, and happy tail winds!

Bike Safety Newport Beach Council Meeting: Tuesday October 9th @ 7pm

"On October 9, 2012 at 7 pm the Newport Beach City Council will vote on a matching funds program. Councilwoman Leslie Daigle and former Cycles Veloce-Team Simple Green member, will propose that for every $1.00 we raise in funds the City will match $3.00, up to a matching limit of $450,000.  If we raise $150,000, the total available for our Bike Safety Improvement Fund will be $600,000. This is a fantastic opportunity to stretch your donation even farther, however we need a strong turnout at this meeting to make sure it happens.

Please attend this meeting to impress upon the Council the need for increased cyclist safety improvements in the city and to support the approval of the match proposal.  Newport Beach has one of the highest counts of cyclists killed or injured in the county and this must stop now.  Together we can make Newport Beach a safer, saner place to ride a bike." - Excerpt from the www.newportbeachmemorialride.com website. Map is below...

The organization will also be doing a memorial ride on SUNDAY, OCT. 28, 2012, 8 AM

A special Memorial Bike Ride for the cyclists recently killed in Newport Beach will be held on 10/28/12 starting at the Northwest Corner of Santa Rosa and Newport Center Drive at 8:00 am. An additional fundraiser for the Newport Beach Bike Safety Improvement Fund will take place with commemorative T-shirts, wrist bands and a raffle to benefit the Safety Fund.  The purpose of this fund is to kickstart needed safety improvements in the city.

Two women cyclists killed in Newport Beach in a single 24-hour period

Some of you have already heard about the fatal collisions involving cyclists in NB Beach. The latest is a hit and run. This is all sad and very tragic. I just found out about about a special meeting they had today, so I couldn't make it, but sounds like they have a City Council meeting Sept 25. It would be good for as many cyclists to attend as possible. I'll post more details about this as I hear them. Hope we can prevent cyclists lives in the future. Details about the collisions are in the link below.

CBR Crit #9 Finale

Last Crit of the season, and my 10th USCF race, so I would be getting my upgrade to CAT 4 soon. The final race was on the Dominguez Hills course, which is less favorable to me, but today my goal was to finish without any crashes.
We lined up a couple of minutes before 7 am and after some words from the USCF Official and Chris Lotts the race director, we were off. One racer showed up on a Cannondale CAAD 9 wearing cargo pants and a T Shirt. He was leading the pack on the first lap and then after that he was dropped, we lapped him later, but kudos for getting out there and giving racing a shot! We hope to see him out again.
A lot of fast guys showed up for this series finale, and hence the race was quite fast the entire time. I stayed top 10 wheels for most of the race, except for a couple of times when we went downhill after turn 1 and we got swarmed, but then I would move back up. A couple of guys kept leading out off the front, but none of them stayed away long. Even though they were wearing different Jerseys, it seemed they may have been working together with other riders.
I had thought about attempting a solo breakaway on the last or second from last lap, but after seeing the strength of the field reel back in the previous breakaways, I decided it wasn't going to happen. On the bell lap, as we rounded turn 3 a rider who had been in the back the whole time came around to the front with a strong pull and I got on his wheel, being number 2 around turn 4. As soon as we finished our turn into the finish, the sprint started. I started my sprint, but like usual, as I'm not a strong sprinter, I was passed and finished 11th.
I was thankful for a safe race and completing my 10th race. I've put in my upgrade request and I'm waiting to hear back. It's an exciting goal I've accomplished on my way to bigger goals. I'm looking forward to working hard in winter 2012 and coming into 2013 season ready to rock!

Urge your Assemblymember to vote YES on SB 1464

TAKE ACTION TODAY!

Urge your Assemblymember to vote YES on Senate Bill 1464,
our 3-foot passing bill

Thanks to an avalanche of emails, letters and phone calls from you and thousands of other bike-friendly Californians this spring, the California Senate approved Senate Bill 1464, our legislation to require drivers to give bicyclists at least three feet of clearance when overtaking them from behind in the same lane.

By giving drivers clear guidance on how to pass bicyclists safely, SB 1464 can help prevent the leading cause of fatal bike-car collisions. You can read all about SB 1464 here.

3-foot passing posterNow SB 1464 is headed to a vote by the CaliforniaAssembly on Friday, Aug. 24, and we need your support one more time.

Once again, we're partnering with our allies at TransForm to make it easy for you to express your support for SB 1464. Simply go to the TransForm website and follow the instructions for contacting your Assemblymember by email.

You'll find a ready-to-send message of support you can also personalize. If you or someone you know has been injured by a driver passing from behind, please include the basic details in your message. Help your legislator understand why enacting this bill is so important for making our roads safer.

Sending a message only takes a moment, but it'll make a big difference.

We at CBC and our co-sponsor, the City of Los Angeles, are grateful for your past support and look forward to your help in winning passage for SB 1464 in the Assembly. Let's make California the nation's 22nd state to enact a specified passing distance to help protect bicyclists.

Thanks so much!
